I first heard of Ironman four years ago. I had just joined a gym, began exercising regularly and started running. Growing up, I did not participate in sports as my parents valued education above all else. I was raised in Shanghai and Sydney, and after graduating from Stanford and Oxford and establishing a career in a large global investment bank, I began to discover the value and the joy that an active lifestyle can bring. When I heard my friend was doing an ironman in late 2017, I looked it up and thought how impossible it seemed (at that time, I didn't know how to ride a bike and could barely swim). It inspired me to think that maybe one day, I could do a triathlon. In September 2021, I finished Ironman Maryland. I trained 400 plus hours with 18-21 hour weeks during my ironman build while juggling a full time job in finance. Ironman was one of the best things to ever happen to me as it forced outside of my comfort zone everyday. I learnt to bike, learnt to drive, ventured to different parts of the country, and challenged myself to expand my boundaries. Triathlon has given me an immense sense of purpose, satisfaction, adventure, and an avenue for my drive and desire to grow and evolve. I never imagined my life to turn out this way and to embark on this athletic journey. This unexpected journey is more beautiful and rewarding than I could have ever imagined.
